Appollinaire rocks. If I remember right, he would sometimes send identical love poems to different "special lady friends," sort of like Bill Clinton and Leaves of Grass.

Always thought his calligrammes and other poems were nifty fifty. Another poet lost to the Great War.

Happy '009!

I've just been catching up with Katy's varied tour stops: all enjoyable, all different. This is interesting too for the depth of knowledge she displays about poetry UK & Stateside: she's right, it's a good thing to be familiar with both sides, as it is with elsewhere in the world. And her book rocks!

One of the things that bothers me about the Poets & Writers "debut" poets feature is that I'm not clear what the magazine really means by "debut." Of the current group of 12 poets, at least 11 are over the age of 30 (one doesn't give his age), and the oldest is 54 (the age I am right now).

The article, if that's the word for it, seems to indicate that the featured books are the first ones published by each of the poets, though it doesn't say one way or another whether any of them have published "chapbooks" previously. I mean, it's common for poets to do so these days, prior to publishing "full-length" collections.

(I'm on a quiet unambitious campaign against the word "chapbook," because I think it makes an artificial distinction between smaller and larger books. I believe a book of poems is full-length if it has enough poems in it, regardless of how many pages or what kind of binding.)

I also agree with the previous commenter that it would be nice to see some poets in the list who don't have MFA's. And I agree with your comment that it would be nice if P&W featured more books by actual small presses, and not so heavy with the Graywolf/BOA types and university presses.

This is all major "don't get me started" territory for me, but anyway. Thanks for posting this.

I have also been thinking about the Poet's and Writer's List of first time published poets, but I was thinking that it would be nice to see some who don't have MFA's. Or who aren't so cocky. Usually I look forward to this issue, but I was disappointed this year by some of the tacky commentary and the assumption of the MFA, which makes the world of poetry seem even more exclusive.

Very sad about the coal sludge spill. It's been on all the news every day just about. CNN, local, etc.

I'd love to be part of the European Union. ;-)

This is great stuff. And not just for "This is why poetry is not (ugh) self-expression."

Good interview. Thanks for the effort.
