Congratulations, Jilly!!!!!! What a great feeling to get that MFA!!!

Thanks for the link re: Marilyn Nelson’s interview. I am a huge fan of her work and her spirit.

My mom is a historian who teaches a college-level minorities class. She mentioned Emmett Till during a lecture a few years ago, and got these blank stares. She asked if something was wrong, and one student said, “Who’s Emmett Till?”

Since then, she has shown the documentary. It is shocking how many college students have no clue of recent history. Ans far more sinister a condition it is when you consider that most of her students are African-Americans in the South. Who is teaching these kids–or, I should say, FAILING to teach them?…

BTW, I saw your hubby is a soundman and musician. So is my brother (who incidentally is a Zappa worshipper).

    Happy graduation!
    Robin

    Thanks! :)

I sat in on a lecture by Marilyn Nelson at the West Chester Poetry Conference. She is great.

I work at a HBCU in Tennessee and a lot of students there, I’m sure wouldn’t know who Emmett Till is. :(

In that, they have much in common with the white students who also were cryogenically preserved through 12th grade, then thawed out in time for their all-expenses-paid “college experience.” It’s up to the poets to commandeer education in this country!!!!
