Today is Pearl Harbor Day and Tom Waits’ birthday. My mom’s cousin, Vaughn Gardner, was at Hickam Field when it was attacked. He was in the brig/jail/whatever at the time the Japanese attacked but they let him out so he could carry stretchers. Vaughn was sort of a con man. I asked my mom once which she thought was worse, the Pearl Harbor attack or the 9/11 attack, and she said Pearl Harbor. She was 9 when it happened so maybe that influenced her response.
