I wasn’t aware that the US is having a “Toy Transformer Robots” crisis.

Well the President has officially established a dictatorship. Good one. At least someone in Congress is speaking out. The speech is about the Protect America Act but also shows how Bush has further consolidated his Executive powers. You can watch the videos part 1 and part 2 on youtube. Here is the ACLU on the Protect America Act and a WSJ article about Senator Whitehouse’s speech.

My Senator, Bob Corker, voted yes on the Protect America Act and my other Senator Lamar Alexander, did not vote at all.

My Representative, Marsha Blackburn, also voted yes on the Protect America Act.

Restoration of Habeas Corpus Act

Well it appears that the University of Florida loves irony, because this is how they celebrated Constitution Day yesterday. Way to go.

This week the Senate is going to vote on Leahy-Specter-Dodd’s Restoration of Habeas Corpus Act.

We have a very real chance to rollback the Bush Administration’s assault on the Constitution in a very fundamental way.

The vote is going to be a close one, and could very well come down to grassroots participation and pressure.

First step: Sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of the bill and ask five people to do the same.

From there, we’ll receive direction on which Senators need to be persuaded to vote YES on this critical piece of legislation.

So I called my Senators (as I am wont to do) and asked how they stood on this:

Lamar Alexander — his office said that they just found out about this Act today and don’t know how Senator Alexander feels about habeas corpus yet.

Bob Corker — his office said that Senator Corker hasn’t written a position statement about the Act yet, so they also don’t know how he feels about habeas corpus yet.

Yeah, they have to think about it. That’s just crazy. What a weird world this is now.
